Success is getting what you want.
Happiness is liking what you get.
As the year marches on, you have been thinking about all of those projects you really want to get done. Start your own business. Write your first or next book. Figure out how to improve your business and marketing skills. Once again, you are beginning to feel like you are getting tired of your 9-to-5 gig. You think may finally be ready to make that next step into moving into a business of your own. All your friends have been telling you that you could do for yourself just what you have been doing for someone else. Why shouldn’t you profit from your own ideas? This nagging though keep re-surfacing because you know in your heart that you won’t get to that place that you deem yourself financially successful working and living from paycheck to paycheck.
But before you line up the backup group to sing your quitting song, take some serious time to evaluate yourself and your future. Be brutally honest with yourself. You want to change your life for the better, so where do you start?
What constitutes an ideal life is very different for each of us. However, many people fail to reach their goals and aspirations because they just don’t have a solid and clear picture in their mind’s eye about what they truly want. Go on a journey within, a fact-finding journey. You know what’s next, get something to write with and something to write on…
1. What do you want? Be precise!
- What keep you up at night?
- What would you do if you didn’t need to get paid?
- What is your heart’s passion?
- What excites you, and makes you feel like a kid in a candy shop?
- If money were no object, how would you love to spend your time?
- You see that child in the picture? What makes you feel like that?
Write down every conceivable answer. Write down even the answers that you have no clear idea how you’d get done. Write down every thing, no matter how silly or unimportant it may seem right now. Put all the desires of your heart and mind down on paper that answers any of the above questions.
2. Narrow the range. Focus.
When part 1 is done, go back to your list and five or six of the things that look most interesting to you. This is where the honest self-examination comes in. Look deeply into your heart and spirit and ask yourself, “On this list of six items, which of these is the one thing that I want to pour my whole self and my resources into?”
The most important thing to remember is that, no matter how “foolish” your idea may seem, it is your heart’s desire, and you owe it to yourself to find a way to get involved in what you want to spend your life on. Others will certainly disagree with you, but you should be firm with what you really want. Others may offer comments or advice, but always remember that the final decision always rests with you. Concentrate on what makes your heart sing, not on what others think you should be doing.
And, it won’t happen overnight. Life doesn’t change in an instant, for the most part. You may not do it right or perfectly the first time out, but at least you are pursuing it. Too often, people spend their lives waiting “until…”.
3. How
Now that you know what “it” is, take a few days figuring out how to make it happen, and how you plan to make a living doing it. Begin today!
The future is yours.
Carpe diem!
What dream have you been nursing that the time has come to release?
