I know it sounds a little Zen-ish for a guy like Ditka, but it is true. All in life is temporary; even life itself. We have all lived through what we thought were the worst days of our lives. And we all have floated back to reality after being on top of the world for a given moment. But, we are no longer in that moment, and cannot allow those past moments to rule our “now.”
Yes, we should celebrate all the wonderful moments, and learn from all the crappy moments, but those moments in time are not “now.”
“Now” is new and fresh and different.
And, no matter how hard you try, you cannot forever linger in that brand new-car-smell moment of success any more than you can or should wallow in the gloom of a past failure forever, if you plan to continue to move forward.
This is part of what I think happens to child stars, and I know happens to heroin addicts. They spend the rest of their days trying to get back to that first pinnacle of success and adulation of their career, or that amazing “high.” But alas, it is a fool’s errand. You may have another career success, or another high, but it will not be the same.
You must continue to create new moments, and make fresh mistakes and missteps to continue to learn, and grow, and to use the Army’s byline, become all that you can be.
The “now” moment is calling to your heart and spirit all the time.
What will you choose to make of it?
