Life is a funny thing.
As we seek some balance in our lives, feeling the tension between, as we open our minds and hearts to new things, new people, new avenues, new ways of thinking, very often new, exciting and enriching opportunities seem to multiply right before our eyes. As we begin to take the risk of stepping outside of our comfort zone, we magically find it is not always entirely uncomfortable.
What am I talking about?
I will use the example of social media. Many of the people that I interact with on a regular basis out here in the internet, including you, the reader, I will likely never meet in real life. But, we are bonded. I have been blogging for a number of years, tweeting for only a few and on Facebook even fewer. From venturing outside of my own personal secure bubble, sending out a few of my own tweets, sharing a few more, wandering into some awesome chats, I have formed relationships with people I would never have met otherwise. These real-time encounters have helped me improve my writing, get exposure to broader audiences, and placed me in spaces with like-minded people who freely give help and support. By the same token, there are times when I can even offer them assistance.
Stepping outside of our silos expose us to the opportunities to learn new things about ourselves, and others. It helps us broaden our education and expand out thinking. It lines us up with the opportunity and potential to do and contribute to great work that extends well beyond our tiny sphere.
Most opportunities and many of the things you feel in your heart that you wish to accomplish or pursue, probably are not going to magically and mysteriously show up on your doorstep unbidden and un-worked for. To paraphrase Pablo Picasso:
“Inspiration, like opportunities abound, but they must find you working.”
