Memories warm you up from the inside.
But they also tear you apart.
Life is made up of lots of fleeting moments. What we carry away from those moments are the memories of the good, bad and ugly. Along with planning for our futures, we hope to carry with us some great memories of grand exploits, laughable incidents, awkward circumstances, and lots of things that will make us smile. But, that is not really what I want to talk abut today…
I have adult children, and several grandchildren. When my children were young, I worked terribly hard to get my initial practice off the ground, ostensibly to make life better for them in the present, and in their futures. In spite of that, we did many things that families did not. We went to amusement parks, camping, white water rafting and road trips.
As parents, we are not always sure that we are making any impression on our children, especially during their teenage years. They are tuned into their friends and the latest fads. Their lives seemingly are consumed with things rather than people.
But, I have had my spirits lifted in recent years hearing my children talk about what a blast they had when we went to Alaska, when we hung out in Chicago or went white-water rafting in West Virginia. They regale me, their friends, and their own children with tales of the woes and the triumphs of lessons learned as a city-bred, raised-in-poverty parent tried to expose them to the wonders of life.
As leaders, we suffer from the same misgivings. We wonder if anyone is learning anything by what we say, or more importantly, by what we do.
So, here is today’s life and leadership lesson. Everything you do and say, every life you touch gains something from you. People learn from us by how we live our lives. The way we deal with the ups and downs of life. They are always watching to see is we are as authentic and as well integrated as we hope we appear. Not in a super-human, never falling down kind of way. But in a human who can continue to move forward in the face of sometimes feaful odds.
Be the best you that you can be. That’s what they have come to see… and to learn from. That is what good memories are made of.
To your continued success!!!
